In this article we will describe the following advanced actions available on the instructor actions bar:
The advanced action of Manage Reviews allows you to manually assign submissions for review and is described in detail in this help article: Use Review Circles or Assign Reviews Manually
Please note that the actions to review submissions, grade submissions, and grade reviews are only available after the submission phase has ended (in Sync Mode courses). Click the Advanced dropdown menu on the Actions card of the Instructor Dashboard:
How to Review Submissions
You may already be aware that an instructor can enter an instructor review for a particular student’s submission by clicking on a student’s name on the Progress table and then clicking the Write Review button on the student details page. However, if you would like to review all of your student submissions or review a selection of submissions all at one time, rather than clicking back and forth from the Progress table, you can click the Advanced drop down menu on the Actions bar of the dashboard and then click Review Submissions.
When you click Review Submissions, you’ll have access to all of your student submissions in a “carousel” format along with the rubric reviewing form alongside, meaning you’ll see one submission initially but can click the Back or Next buttons to review all other student submissions.
By default, the submissions are listed anonymously and the instructor reviews are not identified as coming from an instructor, but you can change the instructor grading settings. Click the settings gear icon, highlighted in the above image, to see non-anonymous submissions with student names and also have the instructor reviews be identified as coming from an instructor. If the setting to “indicate instructor comments on student results” is toggled on, there still won’t be an instructor name attached to the instructor review, but the review will be identified as an “instructor review.”
You do NOT need to click the Update button to save the toggle settings changes. The update button is only used when you wish to review a certain percentage of student submissions sorted by the highest levels of reviewer variance (aka reviewer disagreement). For example, you could choose to only review 25% of the student submissions, so you’d enter 25 in the box to only see one fourth of all your student submissions and click update. Those submissions would then be sorted and presented in the review carousel from most reviewer disagreement to least, meaning how much student reviewers disagreed on the rating scores for those submissions.
After you have checked the instructor grading settings and made sure they are the way you want, you can begin reviewing student submissions. You can either choose to complete each review entirely or only complete certain prompts. Enter comments in the text boxes and use the drop down menus for each rating prompt to select a rating level. The data you enter will be saved automatically. When you are finished reviewing, click Next to give a review to the next submission or click the Exit button to return to the dashboard.
Instructor reviews will be viewable by students after results are released and will either count toward student grades alongside student reviews or they can override student reviews (meaning they’ll be the only ratings that count toward the submission grade), depending on your main assignment settings.
How to Grade Submissions
When you choose to grade student submissions, you’ll enter a numerical grade (out of 100) for each submission and that grade will become the student’s submission grade. Please be aware that if you choose to do this, the grade you enter will take the place of any submission grade that would have been generated based on peer reviews, if your assignment is set up for peer reviewing.
Click the Advanced dropdown menu in the Actions bar on the dashboard and select Grade Submissions.
You’ll see the first submission on the left and the ability to enter a grade for that submission on the right. Click the dash and type a number or use the up and down arrows to enter or adjust that number. You can then choose to add a comment. You can click the Add a Comment box and write as much as you need to in one box, or you can click Add a Comment again to add multiple comment boxes.
If you would like to see the student names instead of keeping the submissions anonymous, click the settings gear icon and toggle off “Anonymize student names for instructor grading.” Do NOT click the Update button - just close the window by clicking the x and it will save your settings changes automatically.
When you are finished, either click the Next button to grade the next submission or click Exit to go back to the dashboard. Any submission grades you enter are automatically saved, but you can change and update the grades at any time.
How to Grade Reviews
Grading reviews is an option for all peer assessment assignments in Sync Mode courses. It is not available in Async Mode and it is not available for team member evaluation or group formation assignments.
If you would like to grade reviews for an assignment which does not have a feedback phase, then you must first select the settings option to Enable instructor manual review grading.
Clicking the checkbox to enable instructor manual review grading will toggle the assignment's helpfulness grade ON. Normally the helpfulness grade is only on when there is a feedback phase, but the instructor review grade will become the student's helpfulness grade for the assignment. Please make sure you adjust the grade weight settings to put some grade weight on the helpfulness grade - it will only be generated based on the review grades the instructor gives. You must grade all student reviews when this box is checked as any students who don't get a review grade from the instructor would receive a 0 for helpfulness.
In general, we recommend waiting to grade reviews until the review phase has ended. After your students have completed their reviews, click the Advanced drop down menu on the Actions bar and select Grade Reviews.
You’ll see the reviewer’s comments on one side of the screen for each submission they reviewed. On the other side of the screen you can enter a grade for the quality of the reviewer’s comments by clicking on the dash and entering a number or using the up and down arrows to adjust the number.
The grade you enter will become the student’s helpfulness score. You may want to edit your assignment setting grade weights to put more or less weight on the helpfulness score as it contributes to the student’s overall grade.
If you would like to see the student names instead of keeping the reviewers anonymous, click the settings gear icon (highlighted in the image above) and toggle off “Anonymize student names for instructor grading.” Do NOT click the update button; simply make your settings changes and close the settings window to automatically save your changes.
When you are finished, either click the Next button to grade the next reviewer or click Exit to go back to the dashboard. Any grades you enter are automatically saved, but you can change and update the grades at any time. These grades will become the student’s helpfulness grade when the final results are calculated.
