Peerceptiv supports assignments that are reviewed and graded only by the instructor or a TA but not peer-reviewed. Some instructors use this type of assignment when they want students to submit all course work to Peerceptiv or as a way for the instructor(s) to facilitate reviewing and grading.

How does an Instructor-Reviewed Only Assignment work in Peerceptiv?
In this type of assignment, students upload their submission. This can be a group or individual peer assessment assignment. Students do not peer review or give feedback. The instructor(s) can either choose to provide reviews for all submissions or simply grade the submissions directly using our speed grading method.
- If choosing to give instructor reviews, then the submission grades are calculated based on the mean and standard deviation set in the assignment grade settings.
- If choosing to grade the submissions using the speed grading method, then the grade entered by the instructor will be the student's grade.
Please note that creating an instructor-graded only assignment will not allow students to view or give reviews on any peer work. Self-reviews are also not possible in instructor-graded only assignments.
Students will be able to see the results when the assignment is over and the overall grade will be sent to the LMS gradebook if the assignment is being run through the LMS.
How to set up an Instructor-Reviewed Only Assignment
Note: If you are using Peerceptiv in an LMS, please always start by creating an assignment link in your LMS first, and then use that link to access Peerceptiv.
1. If you are using an LMS, start by creating the assignment link there. If you are using Peerceptiv via direct login, go into your course and click New Assignment.
2. Choose Build a Custom Assignment.
3. Select Peer Assessment and either Individual Students or Student Groups for 'Who submits'? Click Next at the bottom of each screen to move to the next setting option. We recommend allowing late submissions to facilitate students who have excused absences but applying a late penalty that aligns with your course policies.
4. For the question 'How are reviews generated?' select Instructor-Reviewed Only.
5. You can choose to have a reflection phase. If selecting this option, you must review all student submissions in order for students to participate in the reflection phase. Please plan to review as soon as possible after the submission phase ends if you enable the reflection phase as students will need to wait for your review in order to begin.
5. Add a title and assignment description, unselect any file types that you don't want students to submit, and set the submission grade curve and mean. The assignment grades will be calculated by taking the instructor review ratings and applying them on the curve, unless you prefer to grade all the student submissions directly. A mean of 85 with a standard deviation of 10 will mean that most students will receive a grade of 75%-95%. The submission grade equals the overall grade in instructor-reviewed only assignments, even if there was a reflection phase enabled (there is no task completion grade for reflection).
6. Set the submission deadline. There are no other deadlines to set. Grades are manually released by the instructor after grading has finished.
How to Review in Instructor-Reviewed Only Assignments
After the submission deadline, an instructor needs to review or grade the submissions in order for grades to be generated. This can be done by one instructor or any combination of course instructors/TAs.
If you plan to review submissions, click the Advanced drop down menu on the Actions bar of the main assignment dashboard.
Click Review Submissions.
When you click Review Submissions, you’ll have access to all of your student submissions in a “carousel” format along with the rubric reviewing form alongside, meaning you’ll see one submission initially but can click the Back or Next buttons to review all other student submissions.
By default, the submissions are listed anonymously and the instructor reviews are not identified as coming from an instructor, but you can change the instructor grading settings. Click the settings gear icon, highlighted in the above image, to see non-anonymous submissions with student names and also have the instructor reviews be identified as coming from an instructor. If the setting to “indicate instructor comments on student results” is toggled on, there still won’t be an instructor name attached to the instructor review, but the review will be identified as an “instructor review.”
Enter your review and click Next to go to the next review. Click Exit when finished reviewing - all reviews are autosaved. After you finish a review, you can always go back and edit it. Submissions with an instructor review will have a +1 in the 'reviews received' column of the progress table.
After you are done reviewing all students, you must go to the Results tab and click the Recalculate Grades button in order for the results to be generated.
If the grades do not match your expectations, you can edit reviews, change the grade curve mean and standard deviation, or override grades. When you are done making these changes, click Recalculate Grades to apply the new settings. Then, release the results to students and back to the LMS.
How to Speed Grade in Instructor-Reviewed Only Assignments
You can either choose to provide grades to students by entering reviews for all students or directly entering grades for all student submissions.
If you choose to give instructor reviews, then
Instead of reviewing all student submissions, you can choose to directly enter grades for all students using our "speed grading" method. When you choose to grade student submissions, you’ll enter a numerical grade (out of 100) for each submission and that grade will become the student’s submission grade.
Click the Advanced dropdown menu in the Actions bar on the dashboard and select Grade Submissions.
You’ll see the first submission on the left and the ability to enter a grade for that submission on the right. Click the dash and type a number or use the up and down arrows to enter or adjust that number. You can then choose to add a comment. You can click the Add a Comment box and write as much as you need to in one box, or you can click Add a Comment again to add multiple comment boxes.
If you would like to see the student names instead of keeping the submissions anonymous, click the settings gear icon and toggle off “Anonymize student names for instructor grading.” Do NOT click the Update button - just close the window by clicking the x and it will save your settings changes automatically.
When you are finished, either click the Next button to grade the next submission or click Exit to go back to the dashboard. Any submission grades you enter are automatically saved, but you can change and update the grades at any time.
