How are Async Results Generated?
In Async Mode assignments, results will generate automatically for students who have completed all required assignment tasks. If the assignment requires feedback or reflection tasks, then students will also need to wait to receive reviews and feedback in order to complete those tasks. For example, if there are 3 reviews required, then the grade will be generated when the student has submitted, given 3 reviews, received 3 reviews, given 3 feedbacks, and received 3 feedbacks. For this reason, it is important to remind your students that they won't get a grade for the assignment if they don't do their assigned tasks and if you have an assignment in which students need to wait for other students to do their tasks, make sure everyone knows that others may be waiting on them to complete their tasks.
Student grades will be automatically sent to the LMS if the course is accessed through an LMS. Grades should appear in the LMS within two hours of being calculated. If you notice that grades are displaying in Peerceptiv but not in the LMS, please close all Peerceptiv browser windows and log in again through the LMS, as a new instructor launch should force them to send.
Grading/Results Options
There are three grading settings options for Async assignments: submission grade only, task grade only, or ungraded/completion result.
Submission Grade
The submission grade option means students will get an overall grade that is simply based on the quality of the submission as determined by the average peer ratings (and instructor ratings, if there were instructor reviews entered). A reviewing accuracy score is calculated for each reviewer, but it does not count toward the final overall grade. If you have enabled the reviewing accuracy check then if the student does not pass the reviewing accuracy threshold for the quality of the reviews they provide, they will receive an overall grade of 0.
Task Grade
The task grade option will give students a grade for percentage of tasks completed divided by tasks required. In async assignments students won't get a grade at all until they complete all of their required tasks, so the grade they automatically receive at that time would be 100%. However, if you plan to have a deadline pass then students will receive a task grade at the deadline for whatever they completed.
Ungraded/Completion Result
If you select the ungraded - completion result option, then students won't ever get or see a numerical grade. When they finish their required tasks, they'll get a green check mark for completion. You can decide whether they get the completion check mark upon completion of just their own tasks or completion of their own tasks and receiving reviews from others.
How to Access Results
Progress
You can see the grades for each student on the Progress page. The grades are in the final column. Students will have a grade if they completed all assignment tasks and met all thresholds. Students may receive a grade of zero (0) if the assignment concluded before they completed all assignment tasks or if they did not pass the accuracy reviewing threshold and the accuracy check was enabled. Student grades will say N/A if the student has not completed all assignment tasks but the assignment is still open.
For most students in assignments where 3 reviews are required, when they have submitted and have a "3" in each of the columns, they will have a grade for that assignment. If they have less than 3 in one or some of those columns, that means that either they have tasks they need to do, or they are waiting on their peers to complete tasks. For example, in an assignment with a feedback phase, if a student has only received 2 reviews, then they must wait for a third review to come in so that they can give feedback on that review. If a student is waiting for a long time and you don't think anyone else is going to review their submission or give feedback to their reviews, you can force their result. Click on a student's name in this table or the results table and then click "Force Result."
Results
You can also click the Results tab on the left side navigation bar to see Results.
Overview Tab
Clicking the Advanced Visibility Settings button will give you the ability to make only certain portions of the results visible to students. You can choose to show or hide specific features of the student results page, including rating results, comment results, and grade results.
There are many scenarios in which an instructor may choose to hide some portion of the results from students but two of the most common scenarios include:
- Some instructors want students to participate in peer review assignments in which students give and receive comments, but do not want grades to be visible to students. They may choose to hide grades results.
- Some instructors want students to participate in team member (peer) evaluation assignments but do not want students to see the comments their group members made about them. They may choose to hide the comment results.
Please be aware that hiding grades from students in the advanced visibility settings does not prevent grades from being sent to the LMS grade book. If you wish to hide the grades in your LMS gradebook as well, then you will need to make those columns hidden in your gradebook.
The Recalculate Grades button in the Controls should be used after you make any overrides or grading adjustments to ensure that those changes have been correctly applied.
Export Results creates a spreadsheet download of all student results and reviews. The first sheet, Assignment Results, has the grades information for the assignment. The second sheet, Reviews, contains the ratings and comments made by each reviewer. This sheet allows you to view all comments at a glance for this assignment. If the assignment has multiple components (peer assessment and team member evaluation, for example), there will be a Review sheet for each assignment component.
Export Submissions allows you to download a zip file of all file submissions for that assignment. URL or text submissions are not included in this download.
Submission Scores Tab
The Average Rating Scores card displays the class average score on each rating prompt. Scroll within the card to view the class’s average score for each rating prompt. Each bar graph will be colored green (average of 80% or above), yellow (average of 60% to 79%), or red (average below 60%).
If you scroll down on this page, the “Individual Scores” card displays each individual student’s average score for each rating prompt. Additionally, if you have used the “Tag” feature, you will be able to see an average score for each tag that you set up. For instance, if you created a tag that included 3 different rating prompts, you would see the collective average for all three of those prompts when you view that tag.
Grades Breakdown Tab
The top chart shows the breakdown by overall grade. This chart can help to quickly identify how many students in the class received As, Bs, etc.
Below the bar graph, you’ll see the Individual Assignment Grades tab. This chart displays the individual grades that students who have completed the assignment have received. The task status, review status, and overall grade are listed. If the student did not pass the reviewing accuracy threshold, you will see the word “fail” next to their name in the review status column. This means that the student’s reviewing behavior has been flagged by our algorithm as being extremely inaccurate, often due to giving the same score to all rating prompts for all submissions that they reviewed.
Students who have successfully completed the assignment will say that the Task Status is complete and will have a percentage grade listed. You are also able to see if the student passed our reviewing accuracy check. It will say Pass in the Review Status column if the student has an accuracy grade that is higher than 0. It will say Fail in the Review Status column if the student has an accuracy grade that is 0 or lower. Failing the accuracy check happens when the student gives the same rating to all prompts for all documents reviewed or when the reviewer has wildly different ratings than the other reviewers.
Adjust or Override Grades
To adjust or change grades in an async assignment, you have three options:
- Enter a teacher review: Enter a review if you want there to be an additional review or there is a reason why the instructor review is needed. If the student already has a grade, you’ll need to delete their result first, then enter your review and force the grade again after you are done.
- Force or Delete Result: Force the grade if you want the grade to calculate without all assignment tasks being complete. This allows for the instructor to force the grade with fewer than two completed reviews or after an instructor review has been entered. Delete a result if you want to enter a teacher review or reopen the assignment for some reason and then force the result again.
- Override the grade: Change the student’s submission grade by entering a percentage grade.
To make any of these grade changes, click on a student’s name on either the Results page or the Progress page. Then, select the option that you want to do and complete the prompted tasks.
