These directions are for Brightspace users in programs where Deep Linking has been added by the LMS administrator. They will not work with any other kind of integration. Peerceptiv Deep Linking must be enabled for your course in order for these instructions to work. Please contact your LMS administrator if you do not see Peerceptiv listed.
This article covers:
- Adding New Peerceptiv Assignments via Deep Linking
- Connecting Peerceptiv Assignments via deep linking to a course that has Peerceptiv assignments
- Brightspace Course Copy and Peerceptiv Course Copy: Adding Peerceptiv Assignments via deep linking to a copied course that has used Peerceptiv previously
- After the assignment ends
Adding New Peerceptiv Assignments via Deep Linking
Follow these directions if you are adding Peerceptiv assignments to a course for the first time AND/OR if you are using the Peerceptiv Deep Linking functionality for the first time in this course.
- Open the Brightspace course and click on Content in the course. If you have not yet created the module where you want the Peerceptiv assignment to be, add a module and then open it.
- Click on the down arrow next to Existing Activities and select Peerceptiv. If there are multiple Peerceptiv links listed, select the one with Deep Linking in the name.
3. Click Create a New Course.
-
- Enter the name. We recommend using the same name as the Brightspace course name.
- Enter the discipline, institution, semester and time zone. You can enter a section number or other identifying information in the Label or leave it blank.
- Most courses will be using Sync mode. If you believe your course would be best in async mode without fixed deadlines the class moves through together, please read more about async assignments.
- Click Create.
4. Click on the course name that has just been created and then New Assignment.
5. Use a workflow, build a custom assignment, or copy a past assignment to get started. Please note: If you cannot see the full Peerceptiv assignment set up screen to be able to get started, you can click to open Peerceptiv in a new window (as shown in the screen shot), you can minimize your display, or you can use Firefox or Edge browsers.
6. When the assignment is created in Peerceptiv, return to Brightspace. You will see the assignment listed in the module.
7. Click on the drop down next to the assignment and select Edit Properties In Place. Check the box for Open as External Resource if it is not already checked.
8. Click on the assignment name to open Peerceptiv and complete any assignment setup there like building the rubric or putting students into groups.
9. Go to Grades and then Manage Grades to adjust the point value for the assignment. Click the drop down arrow and then Edit.
10. Add or edit any grade information and be sure to save the settings.
11. If you add additional Peerceptiv assignments, you will repeat step 2 to Add an Existing Activity and then select Peerceptiv. You will be taken to the Peerceptiv new assignment screen. Repeat steps 5-9 for each assignment you create in Peerceptiv.
Connecting Peerceptiv Assignments via deep linking to a course that has Peerceptiv assignments
If deep linking has been configured at the university LMS level, you do not need to do anything additional to enable deep linking at the assignment level. Creating a New Course and copying at the assignment level is recommended for courses with only a few Peerceptiv assignments in it.
- Click on the first Peerceptiv link in Brightspace for that course.
- Click ‘Create a New Course’ on the Peerceptiv screen and enter the information.
- Return to Brightspace and click on the link or Open in New Window below the link.
- Click Copy an Assignment. Select the assignment that you want to copy. Important: Make sure the name of the assignment in Brightspace matches the name in Peerceptiv before you copy it. We recommend copying and pasting the name from Brightspace into the Peerceptiv assignment setup editor. There will be duplicate assignments in the grade book if the names are not identical.
- When you are ready, go to Grades in Brightspace and click on the drop down arrow by the assignment name and then Edit. Make sure the grade settings are all in place.
- If there are additional Peerceptiv assignments in your course, you will repeat steps 3-5 for each assignment.
Brightspace Course Copy and Peerceptiv Course Copy: Adding Peerceptiv Assignments via deep linking to a copied course that has used Peerceptiv previously
If the course has used Peerceptiv in previous semesters and already has the links set up in the Brightspace course, follow these steps. Please be aware that this may result in duplicate gradebook entries that will need to be deleted. If you are only using Peerceptiv for 1-3 assignments in a semester, creating a new course and copying at the assignment level takes the same amount of time to set up and will not create duplicate grade book lines.
- Click on the first Peerceptiv link in Brightspace for that course.
- Click ‘Copy a Course’ on the Peerceptiv screen and enter the current course information.
- Click to open the course. You should see all of the assignments in Peerceptiv.
- Please check that the assignment names match in Brightspace and Peerceptiv. You may need to go back to the Brightspace course and update assignment names AND back to the previously used Peerceptiv course and update assignment names before copying the Peerceptiv course. If the assignment names are identical, grade pass back will be smoother.
- Update any dates in both places so the assignments are visible to students at the same time and the submission dates are the same.
- Go to the Brightspace gradebook. Click on Manage Grades. Check that the grade totals are correct.
Important: If you see one or more duplicate assignments listed in the gradebook, go to Manage Grades and delete the gradebook item that does NOT have an associated External Tool listed in the ‘Association’ column.
Add Peerceptiv Deadlines to the Brightspace Calendar
Peerceptiv sends notifications to students about newly-published assignments, assignment deadlines, and when the assignment results are available if you check the Peerceptiv advanced assignment settings box to send email notifications. If you want to add the deadlines to the Brightspace calendar so students can see the deadlines within Brightspace, please do the following:
1. Go to the Brightspace calendar (Course Tools and then select Calendar) and create an event. We recommend using the submission deadline as the event in a peer assessment assignment. Use the same title as the assignment title and the first deadline as the event deadline. Please direct students to click on the assignment link in Brightspace to access Peerceptiv. We do NOT recommend including restrictions because this may block students from accessing the assignment after the first deadline has passed.
2. There are two options for any additional deadlines you want to include. You could use the Add Recurrence feature to include additional deadlines or create an event for each assignment phase. The other option is to create an announcement that is sent to students 24 hours before any deadline(s). Please direct students to click on the assignment link in Brightspace to access Peerceptiv.
Adding Peerceptiv reminders to the Brightspace calendar is optional and will not affect the connection between the Brightspace content and the Peerceptiv assignment or the Peerceptiv notifications.
After the assignment ends
- Go to the Brightspace link for the Peerceptiv assignment and click on it to open Peerceptiv. If your results did not release automatically, go to Results and then click Release Results.
- Go to Grades in Brightspace and look for the assignment column to see if the grades have populated. If the grades are not there, please go back to Content and click on the Peerceptiv assignment link. The grades should populate in Brightspace at that point.
- If the grades have not populated in Brightspace or if you make changes to the points total or changes in Peerceptiv to the assignment settings or reviews, please open Peerceptiv from that assignment, go to Results and click Recalculate Results. That will re-send the results to Brightspace and override any results currently in place for that assignment.
